Outdoor trends: Inspiring spaces for play
Recent trend analyses reveal a growing desire to create outdoor spaces that hold deeper meaning.
In 2023, aesthetics remains important in outdoor design, but more people want spaces that inspire play and movement.
For years, backyards, pools, and blooming gardens have been the go-to priorities for outdoor lovers. However, the desire to create full-fledged outdoor oases is on the rise. Post-pandemic, people have rediscovered the joy of owning a beautiful, welcoming outdoor space — a trend that’s here to stay.
Enhancing and caring for your outdoor area not only generates positive emotions but also fosters a direct connection with nature. It can even serve as a key differentiator in the real estate market. “Pools and resort-inspired outdoor spaces have an enormous impact on sales initially”. Says Steve Chepurny, a landscape architect and owner of Beechwood Landscape Architecture and Construction in New Jersey.
While dream spaces are an idealistic goal, many landscape designers and industry analysts advocate for a dose of realism regarding costs and timelines. For instance, in-ground pools are a significant investment that requires careful consideration of factors such as construction time, material costs, add-ons, and maintenance. Landscape designer Michael Glassman, owner of Michael Glassman & Associates in California, notes that many outdoor projects start at $100,000, while Rob Schwarz, design director at Mariani Landscape near Chicago, sets initial costs even higher.
Space availability is another critical consideration. Real estate agents increasingly recommend hiring professionals to maximize every corner of a property.
At èLUNAPIENA Outdoor Design, we offer a range of 100% custom outdoor products and consultation services to help you find the best solutions for your space.
A sporting character
Backyards are often associated with sports and play, serving as spaces for activities like basketball, archery, or even golf, which Chepurny notes is increasingly popular.
Other requests include climbing walls, volleyball courts, ping-pong tables, paddle courts, trampolines, treehouses, and even ice hockey rinks.
Cooking, dining, entertaining
These three activities remain the heart of most outdoor spaces. "Outdoor ovens and grills are extremely popular", says Amber Freda, a landscape designer at Amber Freda Landscape Design in New York. Outdoor kitchens have evolved to include grills, barbecues, sinks, and cooktops in all shapes and sizes.
At the My Plant & Garden 2023 trade show in Milan, we presented a new line of 100% customizable outdoor kitchens. These masterpieces, handcrafted in Brianza, redefine the concept of outdoor living and are destined to become focal points of any space.
Weather-proof solutions
What if the weather doesn’t allow outdoor enjoyment? Modern solutions offer protection from the elements, such as retractable curtains, bioclimatic pergolas, or high-quality Italian-made shade systems that combine innovation, design, and protection. For instance, the Vision Bioclimatic Pergola by Pratic provides effective sun protection while allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space all year round. Relaxing by water or fire
Fire pits and fireplaces — whether gas, electric, or wood-burning — remain in demand. In 2023, these features have become more modern and functional.
Amber Freda, who works with clients in New York City, also notes a growing demand for shading structures like oversized sails, sunshades, and modern pergolas. Water features, such as compact metal hot tubs, are also popular for urban backyards or terraces.
Rethinking lawns
Once a hallmark of outdoor charm, large lush lawns are no longer in vogue. The new trend is “less is more”with smaller lawns saving time and water — a win for the environment, says Jim Charlier, organizer of the annual Garden Walk Buffalo and co-author of Buffalo-Style Gardens.
Farm life
The pandemic sparked a resurgence in home gardens, and many people have continued to grow fruit plants, create spaces for small animals, or even set up beehives or miniature livestock enclosures. "We’re seeing more requests for raised garden beds or ranch-style metal troughs”, says Glassman.
No matter the features or style you choose for your outdoor space, remember to prioritize sustainable water sources, energy-efficient lighting, and high-quality, durable furnishings. Let your outdoor area become a long-lasting, functional, and beautiful haven.
